Corwen Reading Retreat Guide: Why Corwen is Perfect for Reading Retreats
When Wendy and I were looking for a place to set up our retreat business, 'Bron Y Graig' in Corwen - the family home of a former Sheriff of Denbighshire - immediately appealed. Nestled in the heart of North Wales, this charming property offers a peaceful sanctuary that feels tailor-made for reading retreats. Whether you are seeking a quiet weekend away or a longer escape to immerse yourself in literature, Corwen - positioned overlooking the stunning Dee Valley - provides a perfect setting.
Discovering the Charm of Corwen: A Corwen Reading Retreat Guide
Corwen’s appeal lies in its unique blend of natural beauty and rich history. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery, creating a stunning natural backdrop that invites you to slow down and savour every moment. Walking through the town, you’ll find quaint Welsh cafes, historic buildings including a workhouse and Victorian railway station, a statue of Owain Glyndwr (the last prince of Wales) astride his horse, and a riverside setting perfect for settling down with your favourite book.
One of the great things about Corwen is it's on the A5 (the Roman Watling Street) which begins at Marble Arch in London and, having traversed England, passes through Corwen on its way to Holyhead. Welsh bus services are excellent and A Place to Read even provides a complimentary pick up from the nearest mainline railway station to make travel by train easy too. Yet once you arrive, it feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle, perched on the mountainside, surrounded by trees, overlooking the valley. Its an ideal spot for those who want to escape without the stress of complicated travel.

Embracing Tranquillity: The Natural Setting of Corwen
The natural surroundings of Corwen are a reader’s dream. Imagine sitting by the River Dee, the gentle sound of water flowing nearby, as you lose yourself in a novel. The fresh air and open spaces create a calming atmosphere that enhances concentration and relaxation.
For those who enjoy combining reading with gentle exercise, Corwen offers numerous walking trails. These paths wind through forests, alongside rivers, and up to panoramic viewpoints such as Pen Y Pign and Liberty Hall. The Corwen to Cynwyd accessible path, which follows the route of the old Victorian trainline, is particularly uplifting. Taking a break from reading to venture out on one of these walks can refresh your mind and deepen your appreciation for the stories you’re exploring.
If you prefer a more structured approach, on every retreat I lead an optional guided walk to the top of the iron-age hill fort, Caer Drewyn, with the chance to see part of a dry stone wall built more than 2300 years ago - which is still intact more than two millennia later. With views across to Snowdonia, Bala and Moel Famau, these walks are a personal favourite and, while they help keep me fit and healthy, they allow you to return to your book feeling inspired and rejuvenated too.
While you're here you also have the chance to learn a little about the history of Bron Y Graig: from its construction by the sheriff in 1888, complete with bakehouse, servants' quarters and stables, to its subsequent division into two separate homes by the sheriff's grand-daughters. They even introduced a speaking tube between the two parts of the house so that they could speak to each other without having to see each other every day!

Practical Tips for Planning Your Corwen Reading Retreat
To make the most of your time in Corwen, a little planning goes a long way. Here are some practical tips I’ve found helpful:
Choose accommodation that suits your style - all of our rooms are fully ensuite with a bath and shower over, but our superior rooms have stunning views of the valley, are spacious, and have a sofa or armchair too. Our attic room, for those who fancy a little character, is also fully ensuite but with the sloped ceiling and skylights to stir the imagination!
Pack thoughtfully - Bring your favourite books, a notebook for jotting down thoughts, and comfortable clothing for both indoor reading and outdoor walks.
Set a flexible schedule - Allow yourself plenty of time to read, but also plan for breaks to explore the town and its surroundings. Meal times are fixed but everything else is optional.
Connect with the community - The Corwen museum offers insights into the region and town's past, and there are amazing antique stores, the historic Owain Glyndwr hotel, a heritage railway, and many other places of interest to explore around the town.
The Lasting Benefits of a Reading Retreat in Corwen
Spending time in Corwen for a reading retreat is more than just a holiday - it’s an opportunity to reconnect with yourself and your love of books in the midst of nature. The peaceful environment helps reduce stress and fosters mindfulness, allowing you to fully engage with the stories you read.
Wendy and I encourage you to consider Corwen as your next destination for a reading retreat. Its gentle pace, welcoming spaces, and stunning landscapes create the perfect setting to nurture your literary journey. You’ll return home feeling refreshed, inspired, and grateful for the quiet moments spent with a good book. We chose it, and now recommend it, as a place to read.
Till next time,
Nic
